Consumers rewarded Sony’s decision to stop manufacturing physical games with enough sales for the PS5 to overcome this Switch 2 in the US.

This is the first time the console has been above Nintendo’s new hybrid hardware in a while, although there’s an important caveat to keep in mind: the PS5 beat the Switch 2 on dollar sales, but not units.

In other words: the Nintendo machine sold more consoles overall, but the higher average selling price of Sony’s systems pushed it ahead of the Switch 2 in terms of revenue generated.

Still, I think this is probably a win for PlayStation: the much newer Switch 2 has been kicking the PS5’s ass in terms of units and dollar sales up until this month, so it’s surprising to see the two trade blows again.

Even more interesting is that this data accounts for the period spanning 5th July through 1st August – so it’s after Sony’s announcement it’ll stop manufacturing physical game discs.

The platform holder said during a recent investor report that it’s seen no impact from the various protests taking place around its platform.

To be fair, overall unit sales across all systems were down 39% year-over-year, a reflection of the current economic situation and high hardware prices.

So what are customers spending their money on? Well, the crummy digital-only PS5 port of Black Ops 2, which was the number one best-selling game for the period and has already become the fifth best-selling game of 2026 overall.
