James Bond Finds New Favorite After Netflix Star Auditions for Amazon Reboot

The actor has reportedly already auditioned for the role as Amazon's hunt for the next 007 ramps up.

The search for the next James Bond is now officially underway, with a new name leaping up the ranks and catching up to long-time favorite Callum Turner after reportedly receiving one of the first auditions for the coveted action role. Speculation and rumors over who will don the tux to play the new 007 in Amazon's upcoming reboot have been rife ever since Daniel Craig departed the role with an explosive flourish back in 2021's No Time to Die. But with auditions now finally taking place, we are edging ever closer to shutting down this particular rumor mill for good.
Alongside the recent reports of an audition having already taken place, the bookies' rankings are perhaps an insight into how well that audition went. While names such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson (28 Years Later), Harris Dickinson (The King's Man), and Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes 3) make up the top five alongside firm favorite Callum Turner (the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Masters of the Air), an unknown actor has now jumped into second place. And, based on Bond casting precedent, him being unknown could be a major advantage.
This unknown actor that has caught the bookies' attention is Tom Francis, an English actor and singer best-known for his roles on the West End and Broadway stages. Francis currently only has a handful of on-screen credits to his name, including Netflix’s Jay Kelly and You, making him by far the most enigmatic choice among the current favorites.
Sporting the dark hair and good looks expected of 007, the 27-year-old Tom Francis certainly has the potential to appeal to Gen-Z as Amazon strives to reintroduce Bond for the younger generations and modern audiences. While his affinity for action has never been tested, his acting talent certainly has, with Francis winning an Olivier Award in 2024 for his performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, and being nominated for a Tony Award.

It's also worth noting that, should further rumors regarding an origin story prove true, Francis is one of the youngest among the top contenders (Louis Partridge is the youngest at 23). And while he has another on-screen role booked with The Mosquito Bowl from Lone Survivor director Peter Berg, Franchis' schedule would allow him to fully commit to the James Bond franchise and appear both on the big screen and no doubt in the various spin-offs that are sure to emerge now Amazon has creative control. MovieWeb has reached out to Francis and Amazon for comment.
James Bond 26 is now all set to be directed by Dune franchise filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the script. While currently unconfirmed, reports indicate that the 007 reboot will arrive in theaters no earlier than 2028.
