Situated a short distance from Nuwara Eliya town and along the winding, wooded road to Badulla is the Hakgala Garden, a natural marvel that affords a wonderful way to get away from it all and be in the company of a wide spectrum of trees, flower gardens, and cool mountain air.

Origin and historic ties

Associated with mythical allure and the site where King Ravana held Sita captive, the enchanting setting of the garden saw the light of day in 1861. With the passing of time, the British colonists beautified these grounds, planting numerous trees and flowers from Sri Lanka and around the world.

Landscaped gardens

The site can easily be termed a “sight for sore eyes", owing largely to the fact that it houses a raft of flower gardens to behold. Feel the cool breeze over your skin as you make your way past orchids, roses, ferns, and forests for one spectacular scene that will linger long in your memory. This makes the attraction a perfect stopover for those with a thirst for nature photography as well.

Peaceful escape

Aside from the outstanding plant life that visitors including those based at Araliya Hotels & Resorts will have access to, the location is a thriving habitat for a number of birds and other wildlife. In fact, with some luck, you may catch a fleeting glimpse of the endemic Sri Lankan wood pigeon or the elusive forest eagle owl. Should you opt to meander along the quiet forest paths near the boundary, you also stand a fabulous chance to view highland primates like the endemic purple-faced langur.

A popular tourist site

Spending time within these soothing surrounds is a great way to catch your breath and improve your knowledge of the local culture. Whether alone or as part of a group, this botanical site remains one of the best ways to enjoy some sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya.
