In a groundbreaking move, the government is set to double education loan disbursals across the country, enabling greater access to higher education. Under this new initiative, larger loans will be guaranteed by the state, eliminating the need for property pledges. Interest rates will be capped, and application fees will be waived, with banks committed to processing applications within ten days during campus drives.
Union education ministry, along with finance ministry, is working on an ambitious plan to double education loan disbursals across the country. Under the proposed roadmap, the state will act as a guarantor for larger loans, removing the requirement for parents to pledge property, or produce high-income proof. Interest rates will be strictly capped, miscellaneous fees waived, and banks instructed to approve applications within 10 days through direct campus drives. This is a welcome plan for action.
For years, getting a student loan felt more like applying for a high-risk mortgage. Banks routinely demanded heavy collateral for substantial amounts, leaving low- and middle-income families stranded. Lenders also favoured elite engineering and management institutes, subjecting students at state universities or humanities programmes to steeper interest rates, or rejections. Unreasonable delays in processing often meant students missed admission deadlines altogether. By absorbing default risk through credit guarantees and streamlining approvals, GoI is forcing a mindset shift in banking. Instead of evaluating applicants through the heft of their parents' wallets, banks will have to assess them on their merit.
If executed well, this plan will protect graduates from crippling interest burdens, democratise access to higher learning, and ensure that personal ambition and ability determine who gets loans. Importantly, it also shows GoI has read this aspect of India's increasingly restless youth right - that education remains the ultimate passport to a better life. Today's youngsters are increasingly aspirational. But systemic barriers in higher education financing still stand in the way of their mobility. This is a chance to break that barrier.
