Kingston, Jamaica (29 July 2026) – Madam Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Leticia Carvalho, welcomed the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Mr. Dmitry Tetenkin, to the ISA Headquarters in Kingston. 

During the bilateral meeting, held on Wednesday, 29 July, Madam Secretary-General presented the Deputy Minister with a special print edition of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, also known as the Blue Book.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on ways to deepen cooperation in the rational and environmental development of seabed resources. 

Mr. Tetenkin confirmed the “readiness of the Russian Federation to provide comprehensive support to the Authority in the implementation of its mandate in all areas of activities.” 

Through its Deputy Minister, the Russian Federation presented a gift to the Nii Allotey Odunton Museum, located at the ISA Secretariat premises, as a symbol of constructive approach between the Member State and the Authority. 

A sample of a deep-sea polymetallic sulfide was donated to the museum – a piece of massive pyrite-marcasite ore with a hidden grain structure that is 90-100 million years old.  

The ore was collected and brought to the surface in 2026 by the specialists of JSC “Marine Arctic Geological Expedition” from a depth of 2,500 meters during the fulfillment of a government assignment in the Semenov-3 field of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean.” 

The Nii Allotey Odunton Museum was established by the ISA in 2019 and pays homage to its former Secretary-General, from Ghana, who served from 2009 to 2016. The deep-sea exploration museum highlights the history of deep-sea exploration voyages, milestone events, including UNCLOS (1956-1994), and important steps in the evolution of ISA and deep-sea exploration in the international seabed area. 

The collections include ship models, samples of deep-sea mining technology, scientific equipment, maps, images, videos, virtual reality experience, and geological samples.
