A legendary Blue Lights character is set to make an unlikely return in season four as bosses confirmed that 'dark secrets' from past will finally be exposed.

The police procedural television drama, created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, first aired on BBC One back in 2023.

Since then, there has been two other series, and many will be over the moon to know that there is another is due to hit our screens very soon.

'For three police recruits in Belfast, the pressure is immense. Facing criminal gangs and divided communities, they don't know who to trust.

'The odds are they won't all make it,' the Beeb's synopsis reads.

Fans will be shocked to find out that Richard Dormer, who played the late Gerry Cliff in the much-loved series, is making a shock return... after he was shot dead at the end of the first season.

The co-creators Declan and Adam have said of the new series: 'We’re very excited to bring this series of Blue Lights to audiences.

'It reveals a lot of dark secrets, examines what justice looks like in Belfast today, and ties together the past, present, and futures of Grace, Annie and Tommy in an action-packed story.

'We can’t wait to start filming it!'

Nick Lambon, who is BBC drama commissioning editor, UK & Northern Ireland, added: 'Blue Lights has gripped and entertained millions of viewers across three series and Declan and Adam’s scripts will once again have us all on the edge of our seats.

'Gerry Cliff was such an integral part of series one so to have Richard Dormer back alongside our talented cast is a dream come true.

'We are over the moon to be back filming in Belfast, and with so many twists and turns in store, fans of Blue Lights have plenty to look forward to.'

As well as focusing on Gerry's murder trial, the series will also follow his team's struggles as they continue to battle the crime in Belfast.

The six-part serries will also see Hannah McClean, as well as Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden make a return.

Siân Brooke as Grace Ellis, Nathan Braniff as Tommy Foster and Katherine Devlin as Annie Conlon will also be making a comeback.

The likes of Martin McCann, Joanne Crawford, Andi Osho, Frank Blake, Dearbháile McKinney, Andrea Irvine are amongst the other stars that will be back on our screens again too.

Blue Lights is produced by Two Cities Television and co-produced by Gallagher Films.

Brendan Millin has produced the fourth series of Blue Lights, and while episodes one to three were direted by Angela Griffin, the next three were directed by Sam O'Mahoney.

The third series of Blue Lights premiered on September 29 last year.

Following on from its debut series in 2023 and follow-up in 2023, series three's opener saw the squad of coppers ambush a drug-filled gathering as part of a narcotics investigation.

Elsewhere, a man died from a suspected overdose at a high-end nightclub and officer Grace Ellis (Sian Brooke) was devastated to learn that a teenager she cared for during her days as a social worker was in danger.

The Bafta-winning show, which is set in modern-day Belfast and follows rookie cops, has reeled audiences in over two dramatic series since its launch back in 2023.

Series three followed the no-longer newbie officers, joined by a host of familiar faces, as well as a handful of new recruits, for the latest storyline, based in the sinister world hidden behind the shiny front of middle-class life.

The trio take a deep dive into the murky world of the accountants and lawyers who facilitate organised crime in the city.

Fans dubbed Blue Lights as 'one of the best shows ever broadcast by the BBC' after the third series hit our screens.

Back in 2024 they praised the 'phenomenal' season two premiere as 'off the scale brilliant' and saw it as something to watch after Line of Duty.

Series 1-3 of Blue Lights are available to stream on BBC iPlayer
