Player announces end of professional career

Tash Farrant has retired from professional cricket because of a recurring back injury. The 29-year-old, who represented Surrey and the Oval Invincibles, announced she could no longer maintain the performance level required to continue competing.

Injury history and reason for retirement

Farrant first suffered the problem four years ago, an issue that initially sidelined her for a year. Despite rehabilitation and multiple returns to action, the condition persisted and ultimately led her to conclude that continuing as a professional was not possible.

On making the announcement she said: “Despite all the amazing support I have received and my best efforts to overcome injury, I have come to accept that I can no longer reach the level of performance required to compete at the standard needed.

“Not being able to perform to the high standards I set for myself, combined with the mental and physical toll of ongoing injury, has ultimately brought this chapter to a close.”

Tributes from Surrey

Emma Calvert, Surrey’s director of women’s cricket, paid tribute to Farrant’s contribution and resilience. She said: “She broke onto the scene at a young age and her career has spanned the significant developments in the women’s game as it has professionalised.”

Calvert added: “To have dealt with the setbacks she has to had to handle has not been easy but her mental resilience to work through rehabilitation, conditioning and then to step back on the field and deliver her skills has been nothing short of heroic.”

Looking ahead

Farrant’s playing career ends after 12 years in the sport, during which she combined on-field success with off-field roles. Her future plans include staying involved in cricket in other capacities following her retirement.
