Photography & Video.Contemporary Chinese artist Cao Fei (b. 1978) is known for producing multimedia works that blend social commentary, pop culture, documentary techniques, and surrealism to reflect and critique the current state of Chinese society. In her earlier work COSplayers, Cao focuses on the emerging subculture of anime cosplaying among Chinese youth in her hometown of Guangzhou. The short film first shows the cosplayers engaging in fantastical combat with each other in the city, then shifting to a depiction of the cosplayers living their everyday lives while still in costume.Cao Fei’s 2007 virtual reality game RMB City has been previously featured by sinθ here.Follow sinθ magazine for more daily posts about Sino arts and culture.
