With the addition, the total number of schools in the city with crossing guards is now 92.
Las Vegas is adding crossing guards at five additional high schools for the upcoming school year, the city said in a news release Tuesday.
The city will have crossing guards at Bonanza, Centennial, Desert Pines, Shadow Ridge and Western high schools starting Aug. 10, joining Arbor View, Cimarron-Memorial and Clark.
All of the elementary and middle schools in the city previously had crossing guards assigned. With the nine high schools, the total number of schools in the city with crossing guards is now 92.
The city spends approximately $3.59 million annually on 322 crossing guards.
The city will continue to evaluate additional high schools to determine if crossing guards will improve safety at those sites. Criteria for crossing guard placement includes:
■ Roadway frontage.
■ Type of crossing.
■ Crossing distance.
■ Alternative crossings available.
■ Number of crossings.
■ Hourly vehicular traffic volumes.
■ Number of conflicting turning movements.
■ Motorist and pedestrian sight distance and visibility.
Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert thanked the Las Vegas City Council for investing in more high school crossing guards in an emailed statement, adding that the move is part of an effort “to make the streets around our campuses safer.”
“We look forward to continuing to work with our community partners to expand safety initiatives,” Ebert said.
Advocate: High schoolers deserve safetyAdditional crossing guards come after an especially dangerous year for student pedestrians.
Vehicles hit 427 kids during the 2025-26 school year in Clark County, up from 120 the school year prior, according to data compiled by Clark County School District police. That includes 177 high schoolers, the most of any grade level.
The expansion of crossing guards was welcome news to Krista Holloway, founder of the school zone safety advocacy group Walk Safely LV.
“I’m still going through the highs of reading it this morning,” Holloway said of learning about the city’s announcement. “High school students deserve a safe way to get to and from school.”
Holloway said crossing guards’ reflective vests and stop signs make drivers more aware of student pedestrians, curbing collisions.
“I’m just thankful for the city of Las Vegas for looking at the data and realizing that it’s very important that high school students do have crossing guards,” Holloway said.
