Palo Verde’s boys soccer team, No. 3 in the Review-Journal’s boys soccer rankings, defeated No. 1 Coronado 2-1 Wednesday night at Coronado.

It’s the first loss for Coronado since the 2023 Class 5A Southern Region title game where Palo Verde won the region title in a 4-3 effort.

Coronado is the three-time defending Class 5A state champion. Its state-record unbeaten streak ends at 59 games (58-0-1). The Cougars played to a 1-1 draw against Sparks in a tournament in Lake Tahoe last Saturday.

On Wednesday, Palo Verde (3-1-1) received goals from O’Brian Vera and Parker Turner, and Vera added an assist. Eder Aguila had an assist for the Panthers and goalie Remy Vallet kept Coronado off the board in the second half.

Coronado (3-1-1) next plays at No. 4 Faith Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Palo Verde hosts Desert Oasis at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
