Just hours after announcing Apple’s support for communities affected by wildfires in southern Europe, Tim Cook said the company will also donate to relief efforts following the Kumamoto earthquake in Japan. Here are the details.

Apple to donate to relief efforts in Japan

Apple CEO Tim Cook has once again taken to X to announce Apple’s plans to assist communities affected by a natural disaster.

Cook said the company is donating to support relief efforts in Japan, adding that the country “has a very special place in (his) heart. You can read his full post below:

Japan has a very special place in my heart. We're thinking of everyone as they continue to face the effects of the Kumamoto earthquake and aftershocks. We're grateful to the first responders helping those in need. Apple is making a donation to support relief efforts.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon, with its epicenter around 12 miles south of Kumamoto City. At 34 people have died, while thousands have been displaced, and tens of thousands of households remain without water or electricity.

Continued aftershocks and extreme heat across the region have also complicated rescue and recovery efforts, according to Reuters.

Cook’s announcement came just hours after he said Apple would help victims of the wildfires affecting millions in southern Europe, continuing Apple’s tradition of stepping up during natural disasters and other emergencies.

Apple also has an internal donation program called Employee Giving, which has raised more than $880 million to date through a donation-matching policy.
