Google is developing a new file-sharing feature for Android devices called Tap to Share, aiming to simplify and enhance the way users exchange content such as photos, videos, and other files. This feature builds on the company’s ongoing improvements to Quick Share, its existing file-sharing service, which has already expanded beyond Android to support Windows PCs and even iOS devices.

The existence of Tap to Share was uncovered through an analysis of code within Google Play Services version 26.15.31 by the publication Android Authority. The findings point to a proximity-based sharing method designed to make transfers faster and more intuitive.

With Tap to Share, users will be able to initiate file transfers simply by bringing their smartphones close together, provided both devices are unlocked. The process is designed to be highly visual and interactive. Instructions suggest that the screens of both devices should partially overlap during the operation, while remaining visible to both users. A visual cue, such as a glow on the screen, will indicate that the sharing process has started.

If the transfer does not begin immediately, users may need to place the backs of their devices together. This suggests that the feature likely relies on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, commonly located near the camera module in modern smartphones, to establish a secure connection between devices.

Although Google has not yet announced an official release date, earlier reports suggest that the feature may debut first on Pixel smartphones and high-end Samsung devices, such as the Galaxy S26 series.

In addition to convenience, Tap to Share emphasizes privacy and security. Unlike some existing sharing methods, users will not need to exchange phone numbers or make their devices broadly discoverable to others nearby. This reduces exposure and minimizes the risk of unwanted connections.
