The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that violent crime in the U.S. dropped 9.3 percent in 2025 from 2024, representing the largest drop since FBI calculations began in 1936.
Just the News reports that, according to the new data, murder and non-negligent manslaughter offenses decreased an estimated 18.1 percent and bringing the 2025 murder rate to just 4.1 per 100,000 people and tying with the years 1955 and 1956 for the lowest all-time murder rate in U.S. history.

According to the White House, robbery fell by 18.5 percent, resulting in nearly 38,500 fewer offenses nationwide, aggravated assault fell by 7.2 percent, and property crimes dropped overall by 12.4 percent, driven by a massive 22.7 percent drop in motor vehicle thefts and a 15.8 percent drop in burglaries.
Axios reports that the drop in crime was unusually broad, reaching every population group in the FBI’s violent-crime data — from the largest cities to small cities, suburbs and rural counties.
According to FBI data, cities with 500,000 to 999,999 people saw the biggest decrease, 15.3 percent, including drops of 27.4 percent in murder, 22.8 percent in robbery and 12.6 percent in aggravated assault.
Every city agency serving at least 1 million residents submitted a full 12 months, Axios reports.
While nearly all major violent crimes decreased, the FBI report showed that reported assaults on law enforcement officers hit a 10-year high with 90,178 officers assaulted in the line of duty.
Axios reports the reasons for the decrease in violent crime are sparking debate over the downward trend with the Trump administration crediting the decline to its tough law-and-order agenda and federal intervention initiatives like Operation Summer Heat, and a reallocation of FBI resources.
The range and timing of the overall decline in crime decline make it difficult to credit any single president, policing strategy or local policy.
17,075 law enforcement agencies submitted data for 2025, covering more than 96 percent of the U.S. population and the FBI estimating missing data to produce nationally representative figures.
According to CBS News, preliminary data from the first half of 2026 indicates that crime rates are continuing to decline at double-digit percentages.
