Once popular professional golf breakaway LIV Golf is planning to file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks as part of an effort to restructure its contracts and debt load, according to a report from Flushing It Golf.

According to the report, players with outstanding contract payments (whether structured as multi-year deals or rolling payments) have reportedly been approached with equity offers tied to a new version of the league, referred to in the report as “LIV Golf 2.0.”

The initial report also reported that the value of the equity being offered could potentially make players the majority owners of the restructured league, contingent on securing funding.

The league has also distributed Indication of Interest documents to players for their signatures. Reaction has reportedly been mixed, with some players willing to remain with the league and others declining to sign or simply not returning the paperwork.

LIV Golf, which lured many star PGA Tour players with lucrative, massive contracts, must now address how to handle some of the payments and buyouts still looming with many of their big names.

The report identifies Jon Rahm as a central figure in the situation, as he is reportedly still owed nine figures on the contract he signed ahead of the 2024 season, which has multiple years remaining. That would make him the league’s largest creditor in the event of a bankruptcy filing.

Rahm did not commit to playing on LIV Golf in 2027 when asked directly at a press conference during LIV Golf UK, according to the report.

Sources told the New York Post that LIV Golf has received multiple written commitments from what were described as “blue-chip investment firms” willing to serve as anchor investors going forward. Those investors have reportedly submitted qualified term sheets to support building a financing syndicate capable of capitalizing the restructured league.

The financing deal is expected to be finalized in September.

Despite the news of bankruptcy filing, LIV Golf has three events remaining on its 2026 schedule, including a tournament next week at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
