The Italian politicians from the ‘Azione’ party have joined an initiative to support Ukrainian political prisoners. Carlo Calenda, senator and leader of the ‘Azione’ party, has become a mentor to Esma Nimetulayeva, whilst Federica Onori, a member of the Chamber of Deputies, has become a mentor to Aziz Azizov, Julia Pastorella has become a mentor to Vladlen Abdulkadyrov, and Valentina Grippo has become a mentor to Ruslan Nagayev. Esma Nimetulayeva is the mother of five children and the spouse of Remzi Nimetulayev, the political prisoner, who was detained by the occupying forces on 23 August 2023; Remzi is one of the defendants in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case (the fifth Bakhchysaray group). Esma was detained on 15 October in Crimea, along with three other women. Aziz Azizov is a civil journalist and political prisoner who is unlawfully persecuted in the ‘Hizb ut-Tahrir case’. He was detained on 5 March 2024 during mass raids in the Bakhchysaray and Dzhankoy districts of occupied Crimea. Vladlen Abdulkadyrov was detained by the occupying security forces in March 2019 in the case of ‘Hizb ut-Tahrir’ (the second Simferopol group). In 2022, he was unlawfully sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment. On 10 June 2019 in Alushta following searches the occupiers detained the acting imam, Ruslan Nagayev. On 16 August 2021 the Southern (Yuzhnyi) district military court proclaimed its verdict as to the defendants in the case of the ‘Alushta group’ of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Nagayev was sentenced to 13 years.
