Google LLC’s Gemini artificial intelligence app has passed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th product in the company’s history to reach that mark.

The company announced the milestone today in a blog post from Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio. Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in a post on X that Gemini is “our fastest growing product ever.” The app joins Search, Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome, Play and YouTube in having passed the 1 billion user mark.

Alphabet Inc. put the app at 650 million monthly users last October and 750 million by February. Pichai cited 900 million on stage at Google I/O in June, and the July quarterly report had it above 950 million.

Google paired the announcement with usage data rather than revenue figures. The company said 63% of Gemini users interact by voice, with a growing group using voice alone, and that parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five interactions with Gemini Live involves a live camera feed or screen sharing, and 38% of school-related requests include an attachment.

Gemini generates more than 150 million images a day, according to Google. The app has more than 100 million active users on iOS, and Google said power users on macOS prompt about twice as often as users on other surfaces. Gemini can also trigger actions across more than 40 apps.

Google said coming updates include support for more than 60 additional regional dialects, a wider set of app automations and new study tools arriving in the next few weeks.

Absent from the announcement was any indication of how much of that base pays for the service. Google has not broken out subscriber counts for its paid tiers, which start at $7.99 a month for Google AI Plus and run to $100 a month for Google AI Ultra. The distinction matters more than usual this year, given that Alphabet has raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, much of it going toward the infrastructure that serves models such as Gemini.

The user number also benefits from placement that rivals cannot match. Gemini is built into Android, Chrome, Search and Workspace, and it has been steadily displacing Google Assistant, which shuts down on Android and Wear OS in September. A meaningful share of those monthly actives therefore arrived through a default rather than a deliberate download. Google has not explained how it defines a monthly active user.

Google is also not the first to a billion users a month. Sensor Tower estimated that OpenAI’s ChatGPT app reached that level in May, three months before Gemini. OpenAI went further on Aug. 6, saying ChatGPT had passed 1 billion weekly users.
