The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed the GCDA and the Kochi Corporation to take steps to widen a 200 m stretch on the eastern end of Chilavannur Bund Road, in order to ensure the road’s connectivity to the Vyttila-Aroor NH 66 Bypass.

Executive engineers of the two agencies must conduct a joint inspection of the road within a week and submit a report in this regard to the District Collector, directed Alexander Thomas, chairperson of the commission. This must be followed by a joint meeting that the Collector must convene, to be attended by the secretaries of the two agencies, their superintending engineers and their executive engineers, to zero in on the delay of over 30 years in clearing bottlenecks on the stretch. They ought to assess the extent of land to be acquired and the availability of funds.

The Collector ought to submit an action plan within six weeks before the commission, comprising details like the estimated time to complete the widening of the road. On their part, the secretaries of the two civic bodies must submit their independent reports and an inspection report.

The RDO, who would represent the District Collector, and the superintending engineers concerned must be present at the commission’s sitting on 23 October at the PWD Guest House, Pathadipalam, Mr. Thomas said, in a release.

The Bund Road runs largely parallel to the congested SA Road and has immense potential to decongest the road and also Vyttila junction.
