Google’s Gemini upgrade for Android Auto is a long-awaited and sorely needed one, but it’s taking a while. Do you have it yet?

Google announced in November 2025 that Gemini would replace Google Assistant on Android Auto “over the coming months.” For some, the replacement happened immediately but, for others, it’s been a long wait. Not a day goes by where I don’t see Android Auto users say that they don’t yet have Gemini in the car.

That’s a shame, because Gemini on Android Auto is actually a really nice upgrade!

Personally, the conversational nature of Gemini and especially Gemini Live just makes so much sense to me behind the wheel. It’s a really helpful tool for brainstorming on a long drive, or even just getting a better answer to your question without touching your phone. “Shower thoughts,” but in the car. But, on the other hand, Gemini on Android Auto has its flaws. Compared to Google Assistant, the Gemini tends to be a little long-winded, and often doesn’t stop talking or continues to wait for input after you’ve already interacted with the touchscreen.

But, at this point, it seems like putting up with a few minor hiccups is still much better than dealing with Google Assistant. It’s become abundantly clear, especially as of late, that Assistant is actively falling apart, and many Android Auto users are fed up with it.

In a poll of 9to5Google readers, the majority of those who upgraded said that they liked Gemini, but the overwhelming majority at the time – late December – said they’d be unable to upgrade so far.

As mentioned, that problem continues today. Despite being roughly two months out from Google’s announcement, there seems to still be a huge number of Andorid Auto users unable to access the new AI-powered voice assistant. So, what side do you fall on? Have you been able to upgrade to Gemini yet?
