Vickers and colleagues have modeled the effects of relabeling grade group 1 or Gleason 3 + 3 prostate cancer as a precancerous condition. Using a number of scenarios, they find that by reducing risk of unnecessarily aggressive treatment, more men will agree to prostate screening, leading to the diagnosis of more men with aggressive disease and more prostate cancer deaths being averted. One should note that the scenarios assume that prostate cancer screening and treatment reduces prostate cancer mortality and that quality screening and treatment is widely available.
