The School of Communication’s (SCOM) graduating Ph.D. cohort is taking the next step in their academic careers, accepting faculty and research positions at universities across the country.

Among the graduates, Akansha Kharkwal accepted a Postdoctoral Research Associate position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Sun Young “Sunny” Park accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, while Junho Park (University of Oklahoma), Alessandra Noli Peschiera (West Virginia University), Talalah Khan (Indiana University Bloomington), Sunah Lee (Loyola Marymount University) and Ashley Johns (Fort Hays State University) have all accepted tenure-track assistant professor positions.

Beyond their impressive placements, the cohort distinguished itself through its collaborative spirit and numerous accomplishments. As they navigated a highly competitive academic job market, the graduates consistently supported one another through conference presentations, job searches, interviews and campus visits while earning recognition for excellence in teaching, research and professional service.

“They really are a testament to the sense of togetherness we try to cultivate in our doctoral program,” said Dr. Arienne Ferchaud, associate professor in the School of Communication and director of doctoral studies. “While we will certainly miss them in our halls, we are so excited to see where they go from here!”

The graduates also credited the program’s supportive culture and faculty mentorship, along with opportunities for research, conference travel, teaching development and professional growth, with preparing them for successful careers in higher education.

As they begin the next chapter of their careers, School of Communication Director Dr. Patrick Merle said the cohort’s success reflects years of investment in the doctoral program.

“The success of this year’s cohort represents a historical marker in the growth of our doctoral program and our school. We have intentionally focused on strengthening our doctoral program since 2020 and now our efforts are paying dividends,” said Merle. “I am particularly happy for our doctoral students as they embark on their respective journeys. This is such an accomplishment for them, and I am grateful that they chose to pursue their education with us.”
