A 34-year-old Kansas man drowned Saturday evening while swimming in the Elk River in McDonald County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The drowning occurred at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, about 460 feet downstream from the Highway 59 bridge.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the man, from Wakarusa, Kansas, swam into a deep part of the river and became exhausted. He went underwater and did not resurface.
The patrol reported the man was not using a flotation device.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:28 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, by the McDonald County Deputy Coroner.
The patrol identified the incident as Troop D’s 10th drowning of 2026.
