A village on Lake Como in Italy is taking steps to ease the impact of tourism with a slew of new rules. One has drawn widespread attention: No one can traipse around Varenna shirtless or wearing only a bathing suit.

Visitors can be scantily clad on beaches, piers and boat docks. But if they don’t cover up in other locations, they will face a fine between 50 and 200 euros, or about $80 and $321.

The new rule, described on Varenna’s official tourism site as “amendments to the urban police regulations,” went into effect on June 27.

New rules also target guided tourist groups, limiting the number of people to 25 and restricting loudspeakers or other voice amplification “in order to prevent excessive noise and disturbance.”

Guides who violate those rules face a fine of 100 to 400 euros (about $160 to $642) and a potential ban from leading tours in the destination for several months.

Groups are also prohibited from obstructing other people in public spaces. They’re not allowed to stop or gather in certain roads, piazzas or bridges.

Many other European destinations, including Sorrento in Italy and Narbonne in France, have threatened fines for insufficient clothing in town.
