How Disabled World creates, sources, fact checks, and corrects its disability and health content, including our standards for accuracy and independence

Our Editorial Process

Disabled World is an independent disability and health information publication, publishing continuously since May 2004. This page explains how our content is created, sourced, reviewed, and corrected. We publish it because readers, researchers, and educators who cite our work deserve to know how that work is produced, and because transparency about process is the foundation of trust in health and disability information.

Ownership and Independence

Disabled World is operated by Auscan Alliance Corp and led by founder Ian Langtree. We are not owned by, affiliated with, or funded by any government agency, pharmaceutical company, medical device manufacturer, insurance provider, or advocacy organization. The site is supported by on-page advertising, which is clearly distinguishable from editorial content. Advertisers have no influence over what we publish, how topics are covered, or what conclusions our articles reach. No organization can pay for editorial coverage on Disabled World.

Types of Content We Publish

Disabled World publishes several distinct types of content, and each article is labeled by publication type so readers know what they are reading:

  • Original articles and papers: Researched and written by Disabled World, covering disability news, health conditions, statistics, assistive technology, benefits, and accessibility. Longer scholarly papers include inline citations and full reference lists.
  • Reference material: Statistics pages, definitions, charts, and calculators maintained as ongoing resources and revised as new data becomes available.
  • Contributed content: Articles submitted by writers, academics, and people with lived experience of disability, reviewed by our editor before publication.
  • Press releases and announcements: Material submitted by organizations, companies, and institutions, published when it is relevant and informative to our readers. These are labeled as press releases or product announcements and should be read as the submitting organization's own statements.
How We Source Information

Disabled World follows strict sourcing standards and builds its original content on primary and authoritative sources. These include peer-reviewed scientific journals, government and statistical agencies such as the CDC, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Social Security Administration, and the World Health Organization, along with university research and recognized disability organizations. We trace factual and statistical claims back to the original study, dataset, or document rather than relying on secondary reporting, and we identify the source wherever a claim is made.

Fact Checking and Review

Every article is reviewed by our editor before publication. Review covers factual accuracy, source quality, clarity, and consistency with current research. Health related content is checked against current guidance from recognized medical and governmental bodies. Statistical content is checked against the most recent available official data, and we state the year and source of figures rather than presenting numbers without context.

We are an independent publication, not a medical provider. Our content is informational and is not a substitute for professional medical, legal, or financial advice. Where a topic requires professional judgment, our articles say so and direct readers to qualified practitioners.

For a practical guide to when readers should go directly to official government sources such as SSA.gov and when our plain-language coverage helps most, see Disabled World vs. Government Sources: When to Use Which.

Publication and Revision Dates

Each article displays its original publication date and, where the content has been updated, its most recent revision date. Reference pages, statistics, and benefit information are reviewed periodically and revised when source data changes. If an older article contains information that has been superseded, we update the article or note the change rather than leaving outdated material to stand as current.

Authors and Attribution

Articles on Disabled World carry author attribution. Original content is credited to its writer, contributed content is credited to the contributing author or organization, and press releases are attributed to the issuing organization. Where outside authors write on specialized topics, we identify their relevant background.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Disabled World may use artificial intelligence tools to assist with research, data analysis, and drafting. AI is a tool in our process, not a replacement for it. All published content is directed, reviewed, fact checked, and approved by a human editor who is responsible for its accuracy. We do not publish unreviewed AI generated material.

Corrections Policy

We correct errors promptly. When a factual error is identified in a published article, we amend the article and update its revision date. Significant corrections are noted within the article itself. Readers who believe they have found an error in our content are encouraged to report it through our report an error page, and every report is reviewed by the editor. We would rather fix a mistake than defend one.

Accessibility

As a publication serving the disability community, accessibility is part of our editorial standard, not an afterthought. We write in plain language wherever the subject allows, provide descriptive text for images, and structure pages so they work with screen readers and other assistive technology. Readers who encounter an accessibility barrier on the site are invited to report it so we can fix it. The standard we target, our practices, and known limitations are detailed in our accessibility statement.

Contact

Questions about our editorial process, correction requests, and accessibility reports can be submitted through our contact page. Information about Disabled World's history and mission is available on our about page and history page.

While we strive to provide accurate, up-to-date information, our content is for general informational purposes only. Please consult qualified professionals for advice specific to your situation.
