Gareth Bale finished up his weather-delayed third and final round at Pebble Beach in California on Sunday, posting a score of 16-under par for this three rounds.

Strong winds had derailed the play on Saturday, meaning the amateurs had to play on into Sunday as the tournament faced a Monday finish with the professionals competing in the fourth and final round.

It was a rainy start on Sunday morning as Bale, alongside American Joseph Bramlett, headed back out to resume their round.

Bale and Bramlett's -16 score put them tied 11th on the amateur leaderboard. Aaron Rodgers, the NFL quarterback who is expected to leave his Green Bay Packers team in the offseason, led the standings with -26 alongside Canadian Ben Silverman.

In the main tournament Bramlett trails leader Justin Rose by three shots going into the final round.

Bale's third round was halted after the course was hit by strong winds on Saturday

Before the competition started on Thursday, Bale had earned praise from a number of big names in golf - such as John Rahm, who said it was unfair that Bale was so good at golf and soccer.

'I told Gareth, you can't be so good at professional football and golf at the same time, it just doesn't seem fair,' Rahm, the World No 3, said.

'Can't be dedicated to one thing and have this much talent for golf, it's not fair in the slightest.

Bale was flattered by the praise but said it made him feel the pressure even more.

'People giving me compliments on my game is incredible, they have a put a bit too much pressure on my shoulders!' he said.

'I am a big golf fan and appreciate what these players do on the golf course.

'It is great to play with them, interact and watch what they do. Just watching him [Bramlett] strike a ball is just something else.

'The power, the touch. He has been incredible and he is an even better guy, which is more important. I couldn't have asked for a better partner.'

When Bale headed back out onto the course on Sunday, he had to contend with the rain

It comes just a month after Bale announced his retirement from soccer, spending his final season playing Major League Soccer in the United States with LAFC.

Bale's playing partner Bramlett is tied fifth nine-under after three rounds, while Rose tops the leaderboard on -12.

Kevin Mitchell is fourth on -10, while Kurt Kitayama and Peter Malnati lead the chase on Rose and sit just a shot behind him.
