The city plans to open a lottery that will give New Yorkers a chance to win $50 FIFA World Cup tickets, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Thursday.

One thousand tickets will be available for games at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, split into batches of 150 tickets for each of the five group stage matches and two knockout round matches, the mayor said at a news conference.

The lottery will open online at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25 and close at midnight on Saturday, May 30. New Yorkers will be able to enter once a day, with a cap at 50,000 entries per day.

Winners are set to receive notice on Wednesday, June 3, and will be able to buy up to two tickets, City Hall said.

“I said we had to make it cheaper for New Yorkers to attend these matches, and today I am so proud to stand here alongside so many leaders in our city and in our region to make it clear that we are doing exactly that,” Mamdani said.

“There are countless New Yorkers desperate to attend a World Cup match, but who simply cannot afford to go,” he added. “We are making sure that working people will not be priced out of the game that they helped to create.”

The city will provide free bus transportation to and from MetLife for ticket winners, the mayor said.

A verification process will be in place to ensure only New Yorkers are purchasing the discounted tickets, he added.

“We want to open the tournament to working people who couldn't otherwise afford it, not to scalpers,” he said. “That's why we're making tickets non-transferable, and we'll dispense them directly to winners at the bus boarding location.”

The games will take place throughout June and July.
