The Knicks are chasing after their first championship win in 53 years.
Free baklava, free beer and for the luckiest ones, even free tickets!
As the Knicks continue to chase their first championship in 53 years, businesses in New York City are taking advantage of the team’s momentum, offering customers free food and giveaways with the hope of long-term loyalty.
Roy Donk, the owner of Good Baklava, started distributing free baklava outside Madison Square Garden during the Eastern Conference Finals.
“We’re a small, small business. We don’t have a ton of marketing dollars, and this is the cheapest way to get our name out there and have people try it for the very first time without paying big,” he told NY1.
His success led to a collaboration with Shah’s Halal Food.
“Knicks fans can come to any of Shah’s six locations in New York City and try our baklava for absolutely free every single game day,” he said.
Jeremy Schaller, who owns Schaller’s Stube Sausage Bar, is giving away 100 hot dogs on game days. He is a big Knicks fan and said it’s a great way to give back to the community.
“There’s just people doing stuff all over town, and people are getting so excited. This is once in my lifetime that they can actually win this thing, so I’m psyched,” he said.
The Jeffrey, a sports bar on the Upper East Side, bet on the Knicks winning Game 1, and when they did, the bar took $100 off people’s tabs.
The bar put $5,000 down and won $13,000. It's hoping the reputation it built carries on through different sports seasons.
“We do have the World Cup coming up. That starts immediately. It may even overlap with the finals. So we’re hoping that we can parlay, no pun intended, that kind of momentum into the soccer tournaments and beyond football season and any major sporting events really,” co-owner Colm Kirwan said.
Mark Conrad, who teaches at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, said the strategy these businesses are taking can build loyalty with Knicks fans.
“Giving away the razor to sell the blades in the future is a very common business technique,” he said. “Is it a bit of a risk? Yes. In short term spending, sure, because they’re spending money. They’re fronting money in a sense and hopefully getting a longer-term return,” he said.
Pinned Social, a new social planning app, is hoping for that long-term advantage. The creators are getting people to download the app by promoting a giveaway: Two free tickets to Game 4.
Lili Poser, who is the head of growth, said the number of app downloads has more than doubled.
“I think the hardest part about being a new business is getting exposure,” she told NY1. “I think using things that are happening around you are so valuable and such a good way to just, yeah, use the momentum that’s already there.”
That momentum is being felt all over the city as fans hope to see the Knicks win for the first time in 53 years.
