Queens native Scott Zimmerman painted the man the Knicks and their fans are depending upon the most: "Captain Clutch" Jalen Brunson.
Queens native Scott Zimmerman says he's been an artist for two decades, painting on a Lower East Side block for about eight years. It's just outside of The Ridge Hotel at East Houston and Eldridge streets.
Zimmerman, whose artist name is Zimer, says his street art represents the moment. He painted the man the Knicks and their fans are depending upon the most just in time for Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the New York team and the San Antonio Spurs: "Captain Clutch" Jalen Brunson.
“I’ve always been an orange and blue guy, because I’m a New Yorker,” he said. "As an artist in New York, you kind of have to see what the temperature is. You wanna sort of tap into that mood, and really amplify it."
"Brunson right now, is representing the heart of New York. Now, it’s a whole team of players, and each and every one of them is getting us to this point. He is the glue to what’s going on right now,” he added.
The mural is just one of many turning heads across the city and being featured in social media posts, like another mural on the Lower East Side, a mural near Madison Square Garden and a mural in Bushwick.

The artist Menas painted the starting five on the Bushwick Collective on Troutman Street. That's OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, "King" Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges. The artwork has been inspiring neighbors.
“A few weeks ago, the mural started to happen, and it just gives you the energy that you’re a part of something special,” said Ana Sofia Solis, a Bushwick resident who lives on the same block as the starting five mural.
Solis says seeing it every day made her start watching the games, and even learn the players’ names.
“I’m not a basketball watcher, but everybody being so excited, I was like, I need to tune in, I need to see what’s happening,” she said.
Brock Napoli doesn't need any motivation to love the Knickerbockers, still donning his Knicks gear the morning after Monday night's Knicks loss. NY1 met him on Tuesday while he was taking selfies in front of the starting five mural.
“You gotta represent all day girl, yup, you know, even with a loss,” Napoli said.
He says he's been a Knicks fan his whole life.
“We got a lot of faith in these guys,” he said while pointing to the starting five artwork behind him.
Napoli was a teen in the 1990s — the last time the Knicks went to the NBA Finals. He said he believes this will be different.
"KAT, Josh Hart, you know, the whole crew, yeah, there’s someone different that’s always kind of stepping up," he said. "Bench players, 'Deuce' McBride is pretty awesome, I love Alvarado."
It's a love of the Knicks and a love of art that brings Zimmerman out every day to keep the paint fresh, hoping the Knicks can punish the Spurs in the paint moving forward.
“This is what the New York that I grew up with feels like,” Zimmerman said. “It’s helping create this movement that’s going on right now, and that movement's really important right now. New York really needs this.”
