The game between Morocco and Brazil on Saturday was a draw, but fans said the experience was amazing.
Fans poured into the renamed New York New Jersey Stadium decked out in yellow and red on Saturday for the first World Cup game in the New York City area. And everyone had a predicton.
"I think the Morocco team, they will win," said Yahya A., who came from central New Jersey. "And maybe they will score two-zero."
"Hopefully Brazil wins," fan Katherine Peralta said.
"Yeah, I think it's going to be for two or four," her friend Ashley Silva responded.
"And yeah, hopefully they win,” Peralta added.
Some took fandom more seriously than just wearing a jersey, donning wigs and face paint. Many got the tickets through FIFA's lottery, so they didn’t have to pay too much — but still in the hundreds.
Some paid thousands, but said it's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
“Very expensive. Very expensive," fan Mauricio Piava said. "Once-in-a-lifetime experience? I would do it 100%. We're here and ready to go. Go Brazil."
There was a lot of talk about transportation to the game, with outcry over the price of the train, which was lowered from $150 to $98.
NJ Transit sold a little more than half of their 40,000 tickets, and things seemed to go smoothly. Afterward, NJ Transit also used buses to get spectators back to Secaucus.
The $20 shuttle buses did a lot better: 15,000 out of 18,000 tickets were sold, and the 4,700 parking spots at American Dream sold out.
But not everyone coming to the area was going to the game. Some were there for a watch party at American Dream, which was pretty lively, with people watching on multiple floors of the mall.
Some paid the $225 for parking and braved the traffic to come to watch their team on a big screen.
"It was really hard 'cause of the traffic," Silva said.
“Actually, the drive was pretty good 'til the exit. And after that, you know, a little bumper-to-bumper," soccer fan Mehdi Chamcham said. "But you expect that around MetLife. We're used to that."
“We were only a few miles away," fan Geno Mayes added. "And then I guess the last mile and a half was like 30 minutes, but that wasn't bad."
After the game, fans left happy.
"It was amazing. We should have won, but a tie is a tie," one Brazil fan said.
"It was amazing — you can’t replicate this," another fan added. "This was great. It was fantastic."
A few people were wearing Knicks paraphernalia, and the game ended just in time for those fans to catch the tipoff.
