Alexander Volkanovski is days away from the biggest fight of his career and there's already talk that he may headline a second Aussie blockbuster later in the year - even if he loses this weekend.

Volkanovski, 34, aims to etch his name in the history books against lightweight king Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in Perth by becoming a dual-weight champion.

The Aussie, who is already ranked as the pound-for-pound king, will be fighting for UFC gold on home soil for the first time in his career - and the bout is looking to become the most watched event in Australian UFC history.

According to early PPV figures, the champion-vs-champion showdown will even surpass records of Conor McGregor, Robert Whittaker and Brock Lesnar in Australia.

The UFC are already thinking about hosting another event for Volkanovski to headline Down Under later in the year - possibly in a double header with Kiwi superstar Israel Adesanya.

'This fight is tracking to be the biggest we've ever had in Australia,' UFC Australia boss Dave Shaw told Fox Sports Australia

'And not only the biggest event locally, but the biggest Australian event we've ever sold anywhere.

'It's on par with Conor McGregor.

'Tracking to surpass it.

'And that's testament to not only the quality of the match up, or the fact we're having it here in Australia, but the impact Volk is having (on UFC fans).'

Shaw indicated that Sunday's event in Perth will not be the only local Pay-Per-View event Aussie fight fans could attend this year (Volkanovski pictured against Holloway)

'Win or lose, Alex is still going to have that UFC featherweight belt and, potentially, coming back for another event this year.

'While there are only a few slots where we could slip that event in, if there is a great match up for Alex, and with Israel (Adesanya) coming back too … it could be something we do in the (northern hemisphere) summer or very late in the year.'

Volkanovski is already the greatest Australian fighter in the history of MMA. If he can defeat the 31-year-old Russian phenom at UFC 284 he will go down on the list of all-time greats.

The Aussie will give up plenty of size to the Dagestani wrestler but is chasing greatness and a continued place as the sport's pound-for-pound No 1.

'Islam’s strong,' Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. 'Islam’s going to be ready. But I guarantee you, mark my words, I’m going to be ready. I’m going to be more than ready.

'I’m going to be fit, I’m going to be stronger than ever. I’m already filling up. I’m already holding more muscle than I originally did in my last few fights. I’m already stronger, significantly stronger.'
