Popular podcaster and UFC colour commentator Joe Rogan was visibly shocked when Islam Makhachev was awarded victory over Alexander Volkanovski, insisting that the Aussie won the bout.

Makhachev won an unanimous decision by scores of 28-27, 28-27 and 29-26 to successfully defend his lightweight belt at UFC 284 in Perth on Sunday.

Volkanovski's hopes of becoming a double champ were ruined, but he thought he'd done enough to make history and clinch the victory.

Rogan also disagreed with the official scorecards and said as much during a live episode of The Joe Rogan Experience.

'Volkanovski is the f*****g double champ, 100 per cent,' Rogan declared on his live-stream with seconds left in the fight.

'Oh my God, look at (Islam) Makahchev, he realises now,' Joe Rogan said. 'He realises now, he just f*cking lost – 100 percent. 

'Let's hear it [the decision]. 48-47. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. 

'We were just – we were convinced – we might have been biased. We might have to watch it. I don't know, I don't think so. Let's see what the online people think, because in my eyes, I thought it was 3-2 (to Alexander Volkanovski). 

'Oh my God. This sucks. Listen to the crowd.'

The loss was Volkanovski's first in the UFC, and he took to Twitter after the bout to give his thoughts on the result.

'Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won (rounds) 2, 3 and 5,' he wrote.

'Surprised I didn't get my hand raised! Let's do the rematch, anywhere, anytime!'

The Australian will go down as one of the greats but most believed he had bitten off more than he can chew by stepping up to lightweight to meet the formidable Russian.

Volkanovski stormed home in the fifth round and did much better than most fight fans would have guessed.

'A lot of people will be happy with that because they didn't give me a chance but I gave myself a chance,' said Volkanovski after the fight.

'I knew he was really good but that I'd prepared properly. It was a fun fight and maybe I could have capitalised on some positions a bit more. He didn't respect my wrestling and grappling but maybe I didn't respect his striking enough either!

'I'll be back at lightweight but for now congrats to Yair and now we build up a big featherweight fight.'
