Why More Travellers Are Choosing Simplicity Over Planning Every Detail

Дата публикации: 27-07-2026 12:54:46

There was a time when planning a trip was in a way just as fun as the holiday itself. Planning became a part of the adventure and set up the anticipation. The journey almost felt as though it had already begun long before you even took off, as you flipped through travel brochures, looked at maps, and planned out your itinerary of everything you wanted to see and do. Travel planning today has become a different story. Before you've even booked a flight, you've probably watched dozens of Youtube videos, scrolled through countless social media posts, compared hundreds of accommodation options, and opened more browser tabs than you can keep track of. With so much information competing for your attention, it's sadly quite easy to feel mentally exhausted instead of excited as your trip approaches. The key may be realising that not every holiday needs to be perfectly optimised. Instead of colour-coded itineraries and hour-by-hour schedules, many people are now choosing trips where they have to make fewer decisions, where they set fewer expectations, and allow themselves the freedom to simply enjoy wherever the journey takes them.

There was a time when planning a trip was in a way just as fun as the holiday itself. Planning became a part of the adventure and set up the anticipation. The journey almost felt as though it had already begun long before you even took off, as you flipped through travel brochures and magazines, studies maps, and planned out your itinerary with everything you wanted to see and do.

Travel planning today has become a different story. Before you’ve even booked a flight, you’ve probably watched dozens of Youtube videos, scrolled through countless social media posts, compared hundreds of accommodation options, and opened more browser tabs than you can keep track of. With so much information competing for your attention, it’s sadly quite easy to feel mentally exhausted instead of excited as your trip approaches.

The Problem With Overplanning

There’s nothing wrong with being organised, but when every hour is carefully accounted for before the trip has even begun, it leaves little room for spontaneity and sets up your holiday to almost feel like a job with a strict schedule.

Holidays aren’t cheap and time away from work is limited, so it’s only natural to want to make every hour of every day you have off count. But somewhere between being prepared and trying to experience everything there is to do and see, it’s easy to forget why you wanted to travel in the first place.

The travel moments we often remember the most are the ones that are unscripted and happen naturally as surprises, not the moments we carefully curated and scheduled months in advance.

Travel is, at its heart, about discovery. The goal of travel is to let the world show itself to you, not you trying to tell it what to do. Yes, a little planning can give you direction, but leaving room for the unexpected often leads to the memories that stay with you because it almost seems as though the moments we just allow to happen have been specially chosen for us.

You should never want to replicate someone else’s experience or itinerary, rather try to allow yourself to experience something that is unique to you. It’s the more unusual or unexplainable travel stories that are often the most intriguing because they are not what is expected.

Decision Fatigue Doesn’t Disappear on Holiday

Holidays are supposed to offer a break from everyday life and yet it’s surprising how many decisions we have to make day after day while on vacation. Which café to try for breakfast? Is this attraction worth the entry fee or wait time? Should you catch the bus or walk instead? Which beach is better? Where are we having dinner tonight? The choices literally seem to never end.

While none of these decisions are exactly difficult on their own, they can quickly add up. After months of balancing work, family commitments, and endless to-do lists, constantly having to make choices can become tiring, even if they involve fun things on holiday.

That’s one reason why “low-decision travel” is growing in popularity. Instead of trying to solidify every detail of a trip, many travellers are now just planning just one meaningful experience each day, if even that, and then leaving the rest to chance.

This helps eliminate the pressure of having to tick off another list every day. Simply allow yourself to get lost in moments and let the day guide what activities you do and sights you see.

Ironically, having fewer decisions to make often creates more memorable holidays, because you spend less time planning the next experience and more time actually enjoying the one you’re already having in the present moment

The Rise of One-Thing-A-Day Travel

It’s easy to get lost in the idea that the goal of travel is to see as much as possible. It’s often trying to get the most bang for your buck or make the most of the time you have off from daily life back home. It’s easy to get stuck in the trap of measuring the quality of a trip by how many landmarks you visit, how many photos you take, and how many experiences you manage to fit into your limited time away.

We need to learn that the most rewarding days are not always the busiest ones. Instead of racing between attractions, why not choose to slow the pace a bit and focus on just one meaningful experience each day.

The idea behind one-thing-a-day travel is simple and that is choosing just one thing you genuinely want to experience each day, and then allowing the rest of the day to unfold naturally.

By removing the pressure to constantly move on to the next attraction, you will likely start to notice small details that often go unnoticed. The conversations, unexpected discoveries, and quiet moments between the scripted itinerary are often what make a destination feel truly memorable. As cliché as it sounds, sometimes experiencing less is exactly what allows you to discover more.

Why Simplicity Creates Better Memories

Think about the travel moments you remember most, and they likely are not the attractions you waited months or more to visit or the perfectly planned day from one of your trips. More often than not, it’s the unscripted moments you never saw coming that really stand out in your travel memories.

Think about all the incredible people and possibly life-long friends you made while travelling. Most if not all were completely unexpected. You didn’t even know these people existed and suddenly they may have become a large part of your life, even if just for a temporary period of time.

These are the experiences that can’t always be researched in advance or added to a travel checklist. They happen in the gaps between the plans, when you allow yourself enough time to look around, follow your curiosity, and say yes to allowing something unexpected to play out.

Less Planning Doesn’t Mean Less Travel

Choosing a simpler approach to travel doesn’t mean you should throw preparation out the window completely. Flights and accommodation still need to be compared and booked, and having a basic knowledge of a destination will make a trip run much more smoothly.

The real difference is what happens once you arrive. Rather than spending every day trying to maximise every minute, try your best to reduce the number of decisions you need to make and focus your energy on actually experiencing the destination.

This is one reason why all-inclusive holidays have become increasingly appealing for travellers who want more time enjoying their surroundings and less time worrying about the practical details of daily travel, whether it’s budgeting, organising activities, or making plans to eat meals.

By taking care of some of the elements that can often become a source of stress, these types of holidays will allow you to settle into a slower pace that is hopefully much less stressful. The fewer logistics that compete for attention, the better chances of you having the freedom to relax, explore, and enjoy more moments of your trip.

Rediscovering the Joy of Travel

Travel has never really been about how many attractions can be crossed off a list. It was a sense of wonder that lured most early explorers to want to venture beyond what they knew. It’s connecting with people and foreign cultures, discovering something you never expected to find.

Perhaps the great irony of modern travel is that we now have more information, recommendations, and planning tools available than ever before, and yet still many of the moments that become our favourite memories are the ones that could never have been planned or predicted.

There’s a certain freedom in not having every hour mapped out. Feel free to take a different street simply because it looks interesting, and allow yourself to linger somewhere longer than planned because the moment feels worth enjoying more.

As travel continues to evolve, simplicity may become one of the greatest luxuries of all, and not because it means doing less, but because it gives us more space to experience more.
