The Jefferson County Republican Party held its straw poll breakfast Saturday at the Gardendale Civic Center.
This year, it drew roughly 200 of some of the most engaged GOP voters for the long-running tradition that gives Republican primary candidates an early read on Alabama’s most populous county ahead of the May 19 ballot.
For a $25 admission, attendees received breakfast, a ballot covering races up and down the ticket from the U.S. Senate to local legislative seats, and facetime with just about all the candidates on it.
Former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson posted the strongest showing in the weekend’s Senate straw vote, edging out U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and Attorney General Steve Marshall. Hudson, the 2022 GOP nominee for Jefferson County sheriff, was on home turf in Saturday’s poll.
U.S. Senate – Jared Hudson (52%)Tuberville demolished the gubernatorial straw vote, which tracks with his overwhelming odds in both the primary — and the general elections.
Governor – Tommy Tuberville (91%)U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) held off challenger Case Dixon in the 6th Congressional District, which is a tighter margin than the longtime incumbent is accustomed to seeing on home turf.
U.S. Congress 6th District – Gary Palmer (53%)Secretary of State Wes Allen ran away with the seven-way lieutenant governor field.
Lt. Governor – Wes Allen (41%)In the heated primary race for Alabama Attorney General, former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell won out over his main adversary in the race, Katherine Robertson, but had an almost photo finish with Blount County DA, Pam Casey.

PSC Place 1 – Matt Gentry (72%)Every incumbent state legislator on the ballot cruised to a win.
Alabama Senate District 15 – Dan Roberts (62%)The Republican primary is May 19. The voter registration deadline is May 4, and runoffs will be held June 16.
