An experiment inside the Alabama Democratic Party just provided Republicans with another argument for closing their primaries.

Then-Alabama Democratic Party Vice Chair Tabitha Isner openly encouraged Democrats to vote in the Republican primary and attempted to influence which candidates the GOP nominated.

It didn’t work.

The candidates she opposed advanced, there wasn’t a massive Democratic crossover capable of changing the results, and the effort ultimately failed.

But that’s not the point.

A political party is an organization. If Republicans want Republican voters choosing Republican nominees, they should be able to establish that rule.

The fact that an attempted crossover effort failed this time doesn’t mean Republicans should leave the door open for someone to try it again.
