A third person has died in connection with the Legionnaires' outbreak on the Upper East Side, the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Sunday night.

The first death in the outbreak was announced on Friday, and the second death was announced on Saturday.

As of Sunday, there had been 74 reported cases of Legionnaires' disease associated with the outbreak, according to the Health Department. Eight people remain hospitalized, the agency said.

Health officials said 51 people have been discharged from the hospital after being treated.

In a statement, Health Commissioner Alister Martin said, "It is with great sadness that I report a third person has died in connection with the Legionnaires’ disease community cluster on the Upper East Side."

"Our hearts are with their family and friends as they mourn their loss," Martin added. "Out of respect for their personal privacy, we will not be releasing any additional information about their passing."

According to the Health Department, there are signs that the outbreak is slowing down. There was an average of fewer than one new case per day between July 10 and July 17, down from more than eight cases per day the week prior.

All 76 buildings that were ordered to clean and disinfect their cooling towers have done so, the department said.
