“We’ve always had water issues: browning water, no water, no hot water. But this?” resident Lisette Alejandro said.
Two cases of Legionnaires’ disease within a year led the city’s Department of Health to test the complex and find Legionella bacteria in its water system.
For nearly two months, many residents say the DOH’s guidance has kept them from showering normally.
“Yesterday, I did a little workout, and that’s where I did my shower,” resident Janet Sibarium said.
“Some people can’t bathe. I don’t have the knees. I’m not going to bathe and not be able to get up,” Alejandro said.
A written notice advised residents 50 years old and older, and others at high risk, not to shower.
But Manhattan Council Member Harvey Epstein said residents heard broader instructions at a meeting.
“In writing, they talked about only people with compromised health issues shouldn’t shower. Then in the meeting, they said everyone shouldn’t shower,” Epstein said.
A notice taped to the entrance warned of a water shutdown as remediation began on Tuesday.
Catholic Homes and Wavecrest Management told NY1 in a statement: “Management is fully committed to the health and safety of the residents and is providing regular updates to the tenant association.”
“The communication or the lack of communication just compounds the situation,” Dana Cruz, the president of Haven Plaza Tenants Association, said.
According to the DOH, it’s held multiple town halls, met with residents as recently as Tuesday and the building remains under evaluation.
Testing must show that the bacteria is under control before that evaluation ends.
Until then, residents say Haven Plaza still has a long way to go before it lives up to its name.
