Swedish pubcaster SVT is on board Scandinavian production company SF Studios’ feature film spin-off to the 2025 series Life on Seacrow Island (Vi på Saltkråkan).

The film, currently in production on the Stockholm archipelago, follows the success of the recent 6×27′ series, which was commissioned by SVT and aired last year.

Distributed by Germany’s youth-focused label Beta Kids & YA, the series was based on late Swedish author Astrid Lindgren’s children’s book Seacrow Island and was acquired by German broadcaster ZDF.

The children’s book was previously adapted into a 13-part series in Sweden in the 1960s shortly after it was published. The series went on to be repeated regularly on TV in Sweden and also became popular in Germany.

The recent series introduced the Melkerson family and life in the Stockholm archipelago to a new generation of viewers.

The reboot was given a contemporary setting but continued to tell the story of the children of two very different families, one from the rural archipelago and one from the bustling city. Their lives are intertwined on the island during a long and memorable summer featuring many dramatic adventures.

The film began shooting this month, with the return of the cast, including Vega Åhman as Tjorven, Elton Larsson as Pelle and Lovisa Lindblad as Stina. The film is directed by Fredrik Edfeldt, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Karin Arrhenius.

It is produced by Bonnier-owned SF Studios in collaboration with Astrid Lindgren AB, SVT, Film Stockholm & Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute and the Nordic Film & TV Fond.

Jon Nohrstedt and Hanna Lundmark serve as producers and Emma Hägglund is the executive producer.

SF Studios has a history of producing children’s films and TV series, having been behind adaptations of Lindgren books such as Pippi Longstocking, Ronia the Robber’s Daughter and Emil in Lönneberga.
