The domestic stock market exhibited an explosive upward trend, fueled by the slowing growth of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and expectations for a recovery in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. Major semiconductor leading stocks, such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, surged together, driving the index higher, and a spectacular scene unfolded as a buy sidecar was even triggered following a skyrocketing of the KOSPI 200 Index Futures during the session. Amid the powerful joint buying spree by foreign and institutional investors, the KOSPI broke through the 6,800 mark in a single breath to close the session.

On Aug. 3, the KOSPI index finished trading at 6,813.34, an explosive surge of 234.30 points (3.56%) compared to the previous trading day. Continuing its upward trend for 4 consecutive trading days, the index started strong on this day at 6,773.92, up 194.88 points (2.96%) from the previous session, and then soared to as high as 6,895.63 at one point during the session, coming right up to the chin of the 6,900 mark, as a fierce net buying wave from foreigners flowed in.

In the Securities Market on this day, as program buying concentrated around semiconductor stocks during the morning, the KOSPI 200 Index Futures temporarily skyrocketed, triggering a buy sidecar that suspended the validity of buy quotes for about 5 minutes.

The KOSDAQ index also maintained its upward momentum for four consecutive days with a slight increase. The KOSDAQ index wrapped up the session at 861.37, up 2.46 points (0.29%) compared to the previous session.

Foreigners and Institutions Engage in ‘Joint Buying’ Vs. Individuals Taking ‘Profit Realization’

The clear winners of this day’s market were undoubtedly foreign and institutional investors. Bolstered by the recovery of risk asset preference sentiment in overseas markets, major players showed an across-the-board buying dominance in the Securities Market, whereas individual investors set out to realize profits following the recent upward run.

In the Securities Market (KOSPI), foreign investors net purchased a total of 2.106 trillion won (about $1.48 billion), acting as the core protagonists of the index’s explosive surge. In particular, they concentrated massive funds into large-cap semiconductor stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

Institutional investors recorded a net purchase of 681.5 billion won, building a formidable supply and demand defense line alongside foreigners. The buying spree was highly noticeable for large-cap IT and financial stocks, led primarily by financial investments and private equity funds.

Conversely, as the index broke through the 6,800 mark, individual investors poured out profit-taking volume, net selling approximately 2.78 trillion won worth of shares.

In the KOSDAQ market, the offensive and defensive battles among supply and demand entities were tightly opposed. While individual investors provided downward support for the index by net purchasing approximately 88.8 billion won, foreigners and institutions limited the upside by net selling 52.4 billion won and 35.8 billion won, respectively.

Explosive Performance of Semiconductor ‘Two Tops’ and Joint Strength of Large-cap Stocks

The absolute heroes of the stock market on this day were Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. The fact that global semiconductor technology stocks, including Nvidia, surged in the New York stock market overnight spread a warm tailwind across the entire domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics led the upward momentum of the entire market, surging +4.89% compared to the previous trading day. Foreign buying pressure gathered strongly, with the stock price threatening the 270,000 won mark during the session.

SK hynix skyrocketed +5.92%, empowered by expectations of expanded supply for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and AI semiconductors.

Beyond semiconductors, top-tier market capitalization stocks related to IT components, holding companies, internet, and automobiles staged an explosive joint rally.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics recorded the highest rate of increase (+12.58%) among large-cap stocks, riding on the outlook for expanded demand in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) and semiconductor substrates.

SK Square surged 9.08% on the news of a value re-evaluation of its subsidiary SK hynix and expanded shareholder return policies. NAVER (+5.10%) exhibited an upward trend of over 5%, fueled by expectations of global AI service expansion. Hyundai Motor (+2.20%) also continued a stable upward trajectory, as its solid earnings and strong performance-based dividend momentum persisted.

LG Energy Solution rode the upward flow on the back of the bottoming-out theory of the secondary battery industry, rising 1.95% and adding warmth across the upper echelons of the Securities Market. Samsung Biologics (+.97%), Hanwha Aerospace (+2.51%), KB Financial Group (+1.27%), and Samsung C&T (+ 2.10%) also demonstrated strength.

By sector, the electricity/electronics (+5.16%) sector virtually monopolized the index’s rise, and while numerous sectors such as manufacturing (+4.19%), IT services (+2.11%), finance (+2.06%), and metals (+2.01%) advanced, the electricity/gas sector (-5.25%) underwent a massive correction due to oil price movements and policy variables.

Won/Dollar Exchange Rate Closes at 1,419.40 Won, Up 3.7 Won

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate closed at 1,419.40 won, an increase of 3.7 won compared to the previous trading day’s weekly trading closing price (1,415.7 won).

As the consumer price inflation rate slowed down following the announcement of the U.S. July CPI indicators, the possibility of a rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) significantly increased. However, the won/dollar exchange rate faced upward pressure due to the dollar buying spree in the offshore market and the linked impact of the weakening yuan.

The fact that more than 2 trillion won of foreign net buying flowed into the domestic stock market despite the slight increase in the exchange rate is interpreted as a result of global capital’s judgment that the speed of profit improvement for Korean semiconductor companies will be far steeper than any concerns over foreign exchange losses.

The securities industry evaluates that this settlement of the KOSPI at the 6,800 mark may be the resumption of a structural rally, going beyond a simple technical rebound.

As the July CPI inflation rate slowed compared to the previous month (3.5%) and met market expectations, the uncertainty regarding the U.S. Fed’s rate cut schedule has been substantially resolved. This acts as a catalyst accelerating the supply of global liquidity toward risk assets.

The perception of extreme undervaluation across the entire semiconductor value chain is also being cleared, with the combined operating profit forecast for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix for the year 2027 being massively revised upwards.

Therefore, as the desire for profit realization following the short-term spike could grow strong, a response centered around semiconductor, IT, and AI beneficiary stocks with definitive earnings momentum appears to be effective, while keeping a close watch on the continuation of foreign supply and demand and the stabilization of the exchange rate at the 1,400 won level.
