The National Pension Service (NPS) has expanded its investment proportion in the Chinese market by increasing its investment scale in companies based in mainland China by more than 3.4 trillion won (about $2.4 billion) in one year. Despite regulatory risks stemming from the hegemonic competition between the United States and China, the investment attractiveness of Chinese companies equipped with technological prowess appears to be highlighted again as their stock prices ride an upward trend.

According to the overseas stock investment status as of the end of last year (2025) disclosed by the National Pension Service, the valuation of holdings in companies with their headquarters or major business bases in mainland China was tallied at approximately 11.8042 trillion won. This is an increase of about 40% compared to 8.3981 trillion won at the end of 2024. The proportion of Chinese companies in the total overseas stock valuation also rose by 0.26% points from 1.98% to 2.24%.

The NPS newly added about 400 billion won worth of China-related stocks to its portfolio at the end of last year. The largest portion among the newly incorporated stocks was the Hong Kong-listed shares of battery maker CATL, with a valuation reaching 124.5 billion won. This was followed by gold producer Zijin Gold International with 53.3 billion won, pharmaceutical company Hengrui Pharmaceuticals with 45.8 billion won, and power equipment company Huaming Power with 37.6 billion won.

By sector, it focused on the future growth industries of electric vehicles and batteries. The combined valuation of related stocks, including CATL, electric vehicle maker Leapmotor, and auto parts makers Shuanghuan Driveline and Xinquan Automotive, is 139.7 billion won. It also invested more than 80 billion won in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) technology stocks, and advanced manufacturing stocks. Hua Hong Semiconductor, Shannon Semiconductor, Nexchip Semiconductor, SMIC, and Baidu were included in the major investment targets.

Stocks included in the United States regulatory targets are rather recording high return rates, supporting investment performance. CATL, which has the largest holding scale, has seen its stock price rise by nearly 30% since the beginning of the year, and WuXi AppTec, whose valuation increased by 178.6 billion won in one year, has recorded a stock price growth rate of over 75% this year. Recently, it has continued its investment in technology stocks by participating in the initial public offering (IPO) of Zhongji Innolight, an optical communication parts maker that is drawing attention due to expanding AI data center demand despite being a United States regulatory target.

Investor sentiment toward the overall Chinese market is also in a recovering trend. During the domestic stock market correction period in July, ‘RISE China HSCEI(H),’ which invests in large-cap stocks in the Hong Kong stock market, took 4th place among all ETFs with a return rate of 13.83%. Major China-related ETFs such as ‘RISE China MSCI China(H)’ and ‘TIGER China Hang Seng 30’ also ranked within the top 10 in return rates, proving the market’s interest.
