A House of Lords select committee has today published a paper called 'Growing up with the Internet'. Department Professor Marina Jirotka has worked as a specialist advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications for their enquiry into Children and the Internet.
The paper sets out recommendations which call for sustained leadership from the Government at the highest level, an ambitious programme of digital literacy, minimum standards for those providing internet services and content, and a commitment to child-centred design.
‘It is no longer sufficient to teach digital skills in specialist computer science classes to only some pupils. We recommend that digital literacy sit alongside reading, writing and mathematics as the fourth pillar of a child’s education; and that no child should leave school without a well-rounded understanding of the digital world.’
