Professor Kevin Burrage and Dr Alfonso Bueno-Orovio have just returned from the Dagstuhl seminar on Multiscale Spatial Computational Systems Biology that ran from 23 to 28 November 2014.
The Schloss Dagstuhl Leibniz Centre for Informatics is the world's premier venue for informatics, where world-class scientists, promising young researchers, and practitioners come together to exchange their knowledge and to discuss their research findings in informatics and its applications. It is somewhat of an honour to be invited to participate. The centre is based in a castle built in the 1760s and situated in a beautiful wooded area of Saarland in western Germany
There were about 60 participants from around the world and over the five days we separated into eight groups to address fundamental problems in the multiscale modelling of complex biological and physiological dynamics. Our group ended up investigating the inverse problem of parameter calibration for multiscale models using a variety of new ideas including a recent idea just used in building spatio-temporal stochastic models of insurgency action in Afghanistan.
