To many, the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a new advancement in technology meant to streamline our lives even further. In your home for instance, IoT technologies enable voice commands to control appliances (for instance lights, TVs and even door locks) and wearables are now becoming ubiquitous. But, and there’s always a ‘but’, are there significant new security and privacy risks to using these forms of new technology?

In an article published last week in The Conversation, cyber security researcher Dr Jason R C Nurse reflected on the issues present with these technologies in the context of the recent Strava privacy incident. In the article, Jason considers the range of new risks, and examines how they can impact individual’s privacy, and also provide a platform through which employers can be harmed, as in the case with Strava potentially exposing secret military bases.
