Strategic Communications Manager Georgia Broome has been commended in the MPLS ED&I Awards 2024 for her work on neuroinclusive communications.
Staff and students across the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) have been recognised for going above and beyond in their efforts to advance equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I).
Georgia was commended in the Outstanding ED&I Champion (Staff) category which is an award made to an academic, researcher or professional services member of staff who has shown outstanding dedication, sustained commitment, and effective leadership or impact in advancing ED&I.
Georgia’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment is evident not only in her primary role as a communications specialist but also in the additional time and effort she invests in ED&I initiatives beyond her job description. Georgia has made a particularly significant contribution by developing a practical and thoughtful ‘Neuroinclusive communications guide’. This guide reflects her understanding of the challenges neurodivergent individuals face in accessing and engaging with communications. An extract from Georgia’s nomination
The ‘Neuroinclusive communications guide’ has been shared with the communications community across the University of Oxford, actively promoting the need for clear, accessible, and inclusive communication practices. The guide has had a tangible impact, helping colleagues understand the nuances of neurodivergent needs and encouraging them to adapt their communications accordingly.
I believe neuroinclusive communications is going to be a core skill for communications professionals as our audience changes. It is estimated that 20% of the population is neurodivergent so that's potentially 20% of our audience. If you're not neuroinclusive, you are potentially excluding neurodivergent people. Georgia Broome, Strategic Communications Manager
