Elias Koutsoupias, Professor of Computer Science, is one of 14 Oxford researchers to receive a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. The awards give senior researchers the opportunity to pursue ambitious, curiosity-driven projects that could lead to major scientific breakthroughs.
The grants are one of Europe’s most competitive and prestigious research funding awards, with only 9.6% of this year’s proposals being selected for funding.
Professor Koutsoupias’s project addresses a fundamental question at the frontier of computer science: what are the principles for designing robust, predictable, and efficient algorithms for strategic environments? By developing a new mathematical framework called ‘algorithmic regularity’, the research will establish foundational theories to ensure algorithmic fairness and stability. Ultimately, this work aims to solve long-standing open problems and shape the next decade of algorithmic mechanism design.
Professor Koutsoupias’ research interests include algorithmic aspects of game theory, economics and networks, online algorithms, decision-making under uncertainty, design and analysis of algorithms, computational complexity. He received the Gödel Prize of theoretical computer science in 2012 for his work on the price of anarchy, in reference to laying the foundations of algorithmic game theory.
Receiving this grant is an incredible honour that will allow my research group to tackle fundamental questions in algorithmic theory and explore open questions at the intersection of computer science and economics. Professor Elias Koutsoupias
