DENVER — Warm temperatures and active skies will set the stage for showers and thunderstorms later Thursday, with the Eastern Plains at risk for large hail, damaging winds and even an isolated tornado.

The I-25 Corridor and foothills may see less-intense storms, but afternoon and evening hours could bring significantly stronger weather to areas farther east, depending on how far humid air pushes westward.

Lingering storms tonight

Denver7 chief meteorologist Lisa Hildago said earlier we could see a risk of severe weather mainly east of I-25 through early evening as a few of these cells could produce larger hail and damaging winds.

9:32 p.m. | Flight delays | More than 750 flights have been delayed so far at DIA, per FlightAware. Nine have been canceled.

8:44 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning near Arriba | The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for part of Eastern Colorado in and around Arriba, warning of possible golf ball-sized hail and the potential for a tornado. The alert is in effect through 9:15 p.m.

6:54 p.m. | Ground stop extended | Ground stop for departures to DIA, first issued around 5 p.m., has been extended to 8 p.m.

5:52 p.m. | Tornado confirmed | NWS confirmed a tornado over Thurman, 35 miles northeast of Limon. Officials said the tornado was moving east at 15 mph. The NWS also warned of "baseball-sized hail" and flying debris that could be dangerous.

The agency said mobile homes will likely be damaged or destroyed, and damage to roofs, windows vehicles and trees is also likely.

Strong storms firing off across Colorado's eastern plains

5:40 p.m. | Ground stop at DIA | Flights coming into Denver are grounded until 6:30 p.m. due to wind, according to the FAA.

5:23 p.m. | Tornado warning | A tornado warning has been issued for Lindon and Anton until 6 p.m. after a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 9 miles south of Lindon, or 30 miles northeast of Limon, moving east at 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely, the NWS said.

4:52 p.m. | Tornado warning | A tornado warning has been issued for north central Lincoln County and southwestern Washington County until 5:30 p.m. after a radar-indicated tornado was identified 7 miles south of Last Chance, or 26 miles north of Limon, moving east at 20 mph, according to the NWS.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely, the NWS said.

Up to 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail is possible, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

4:31 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | A severe thunderstorm warning including Iliff and Padroni is in effect until 5 p.m.

2:53 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm watch | A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Cheyenne, Elbert, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Washington, and Yuma counties through 10 p.m. Thursday.

Isolated gusts of up to 70 mph are possible along with scattered hail up to two inches in size. Forecasters said "a couple tornadoes" are also possible.
