World Jewish Congress Congratulates Hungary’s Prime Minister-Elect Péter Magyar

NEW YORK — World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder sent a letter to Prime Minister-Elect Péter Magyar following his election, congratulating him on his victory and expressing confidence in Hungary’s continued commitment to supporting Jewish life and combating antisemitism.

Writing on behalf of the organization’s more than 100 affiliated communities worldwide, Lauder highlighted Hungary’s longstanding relationship with the global Jewish community and its vibrant domestic Jewish life, including its affiliate, the Federation of the Hungarian Jewish Communities, currenly led by Andor Grósz, who also serves as a WJC Vice President. He noted that the “resilience, cultural richness, and historical legacy of Hungarian Jewry remain an enduring and integral part of the country’s national identity.”

Lauder welcomed the Prime Minister-Elect’s pledge to maintain “zero tolerance for antisemitism” and to ensure “the safety and vitality of Jewish life” in Hungary, adding that such a commitment “carries particular significance and serves as an important example” at a time of rising threats across Europe. The letter further expressed confidence that Hungary will continue to strengthen its relationship with the Israel and play a constructive role within the European Union.

Concluding, the WJC affirmed its readiness to work with the incoming government to “further strengthen cooperation” and promote the security and well-being of Jewish communities in Hungary and beyond.
