Police say child died from blunt force injuries after homicide investigation

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A second person has been arrested in the homicide investigation surrounding the death of a 5-year-old Newport News boy after investigators determined the child died from blunt force trauma, police announced.

Officers responded at approximately 2:19 p.m. Thursday, July 16, to the 300 block of Walden Pond Court for a report of an unresponsive 5-year-old boy.

Medics attempted life-saving measures before transporting the child to a local hospital, where he died later that evening.

According to the Newport News Police Department, an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner determined the boy died from internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Investigators subsequently classified the death as a homicide.

Police previously arrested the child’s mother, 27-year-old Katrina Marie Sudberry of Newport News, on Friday, July 17. She was charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

Following additional investigation, detectives identified 30-year-old Gregory Glenn Martin as a second suspect.

Martin was arrested Tuesday, July 21, and charged with second-degree murder, child abuse or neglect causing serious injury, and failure to provide required information for the sex offender registry.

Police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading to the child’s death.

The charges are allegations, and Sudberry and Martin are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
