Tests in zero-coverage areas showed Starlink Mobile automatically connecting existing LTE phones to its 650-satellite network.

Airtel Africa has announced the successful completion of testing for data and messaging services in partnership with SpaceX, marking a major step toward extending connectivity to underserved and remote areas across Africa through Starlink Mobile.

The trial demonstrated that standard 4G smartphones can connect directly to Starlink satellites in locations where terrestrial mobile networks have no coverage. By leveraging a constellation of more than 650 satellites, the technology effectively enables communication in areas previously considered unreachable.

During the testing phase, users were able to access everyday applications such as WhatsApp for calls, Facebook Messenger, and even carry out financial transactions via the Airtel app. These use cases highlight the real-world potential of satellite-enabled mobile connectivity for daily communication and services.

The development builds on a partnership agreement signed in late 2025 between Airtel Africa and SpaceX to roll out satellite-to-mobile services across Airtel Africa’s 14 operating markets. The initiative aims to deliver internet access to both urban and remote areas by 2026, positioning Airtel Africa as the first operator on the continent to introduce Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology to its 174m subscribers.

Following the successful tests, Airtel Africa is preparing to expand the service across its footprint, subject to regulatory approvals in individual countries. The company is also looking ahead to the next phase of deployment, which will include voice calling capabilities and enhanced broadband performance powered by Starlink Mobile V2 technology.

The milestone underscores the growing role of satellite-based networks in complementing traditional telecom infrastructure, with Airtel Africa aiming to ensure continuous connectivity for its customers regardless of location while helping to bridge the digital divide across Africa.
