Across the country, Australia is falling behind in adapting to the baked-in impacts of climate change.
New developments in western Sydney show what happens when governments focus on the housing crisis without also tackling the climate crisis – the cure to one problem can make the other worse.
No matter what is done to reduce carbon emissions, more violent weather, sea-level rise, flooding, fire and drought are inevitable. That scenario is raising huge questions for governments, councils, communities and authorities.
Up and down the NSW coast, suburbs and townships are built on low-lying land around coastal lagoons, lakes and estuaries. Sea level rises will make some areas uninhabitable.
