AstraZeneca scraps late‑stage study – and reports dual successes in lung cancer

AstraZeneca is discontinuing a global Phase III trial that has been evaluating the antibody volrustimig for non‑small cell lung cancer after the chances of success were deemed low. At the same time, the company is reporting promising data for two other lung‑cancer candidates.

In the discontinued study, eVOLVE‑Lung02, volrustimig was assessed in combination with chemotherapy as first‑line treatment for metastatic non‑small cell lung cancer.

The decision to halt the trial was based on a recommendation from an independent data review committee, which concluded that the treatment was unlikely to demonstrate superior efficacy compared with standard therapy with Keytruda (pembrolizumab) plus chemotherapy for the study’s primary target group: patients with PD‑L1‑negative tumours.
