The flags in the film community are flying at half mast today after news that Superman actor Nicholas Hoult has been cast in the already greenlit second season of the upcoming HBO-produced Harry Potter remake series.Hoult will play Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of the upcoming series, per Variety. Lockhart is a main character in the second book, Chamber of Secrets. A celebrity wizard whose appointment at Hogwarts causes quite a stir, the vain Lockhart eventually gets unmasked as a fraud who doesn’t have the magical acumen he claims to possess.Backlash to news of the casting was swift, with many people upset that Hoult — who has a pretty full Hollywood dance card — would take a role in the Harry Potter series given the intensely anti-transgender views of its creator, author J.K. Rowling. Several posts on X, many of which quoted trade publication announcements of Hoult’s casting, took umbrage with Hoult’s decision to accept the role. “Be so in demand you can literally pick any role yet decide to star in a dogshit reboot tv show led by a transphobic bigot,” one person wrote on X, alongside a meme of Robert Pattinson in the upcoming film Primetime.
“He had so much goodwill until this point,” wrote another person, alongside a black-and-white photo of Hoult with the years 1989-2026, seemingly making reference to the end of his beloved status.
Another took a screen grab of Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man, edited to make it seem that he is saying “be ashamed of who you are.”
“nicholas hoult it seems i’ve grown to loathe you in an instant there are no longer sexual urges or desires you come to me as an enemy whom i once threw apples at in papa’s orchard,” another post on X reads.
Filming on the second season is set to begin in the fall, prior to the first season’s December 25, 2026 release date, per Variety. The series landed a second season renewal in May, well ahead of the first season’s debut. Hoult is the latest Potter-affiliated actor to face backlash for taking a role in a property associated with the IP. Just earlier this week, actor Bel Powley, who is set to play abusive aunt Petunia Dursley in the upcoming adaptation, said that she “strongly disagrees” with Rowling’s beliefs when it comes to trans people. “I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance,” she said in an August 10 interview with The Telegraph.John Lithgow, who is set to play Dumbledore in the series, previously said that a close friend with a trans child texted him shortly after his casting was announced. The text included a link to an open letter asking the actor to turn down the role. Lithgow told the Times of London he was unsure what Rowling’s views had to do with the show. “I thought, ‘Why is this a factor at all?’ I wonder how J.K. Rowling has absorbed it,” he said. “I suppose at a certain point I’ll meet her, and I’m curious to talk to her.”Nick Frost, who will play Hagrid in the HBO project, has also been asked about Rowling’s views. In an interview with The Observer, he said that she is “allowed her opinion, and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape, or form.”Though Hoult is not himself queer, he has enjoyed a devoted LGBTQ+ following given his filmography, which includes such beloved queer films as The Favourite and A Single Man as well as the television series Skins. Hoult has also previously been an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and representation. On the topic of The Favourite’s LGBTQ+ representation, for instance, the actor told Pride Source in 2018, “It's great that the conversation is happening and that these movies are getting made more and more, but it should be up to the point where it's completely normal and it's not even something that people have to keep feeling is unusual.”Hoult has enjoyed a string of critical and commercial successes in recent years. Aside from playing Lex Luthor in Superman, he also played the lead (but not-titular) role in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu and starred in Clint Eastwood’s final film Juror #2. He has also been announced as part of queer director Tom Ford’s upcoming film Cry to Heaven, which also stars trans actors Lux Pascal and Hunter Schaefer. Get the best of what’s queer.
